Charlie & Barry Miller two young and ambitious lads dwelling in the late 20th century terrace house with their working class parents. Life has its good and bad days, yet they were happy in their tiny house, with their neighbors. Charlie is the eldest and Barry is five years younger, they have a good childhood comparing to others at that time.
One fine day as they were playing on the streets, they saw two kids walking towards their direction, they were coming back from a nearby shop. Charlie recognised them they are Julia and Jill, they moved in recently to the neighborhood, they are posh kids from London, they never talked or played with Charlie and Barry, even though Charlie tried playing with them, they always found a way to avoid him. Charlie often stood close by when they played say they had three bicycles at home and Charlie's family had none. Charlie hoped that someday they might invite him to try riding a bicycle. He always looked at those magical vehicles with awe.
Julia and Jill walked past them without minding Charlie and Barry, but Charlie noticed something familiar in Jill's hand, its a pack of m&m's, lovely, colorful, small balls consisting of a candy shell surrounding a chocolate filling. His aunt brought it for him long time back when she came to visit.
Charlie and Barry couldn't take their eyes of that pack, they looked at them with carving eyes. Charlie wished if they would offer them one.
Julia and Jill have shared with each other and finished eating m&m's on their way back home. Jill dropped the empty cover on the street, Charlie and Barry noticed that one red button-shaped chocolate have fallen of the pack on to the dirty street, something raced inside their bodies, they both didn't say a word to each other, they waited patiently for Julia and Jill to disappear around the corner, they both disappeared and there is nobody else on the street.
Charlie and Barry started racing towards the pack of empty m&m's, the race towards happiness, the race to get the treasure, the pirates, the rebels, the unwanted. Charlie got to the pack first and he picked it up in a swing. He looked inside, they were lucky again, there was one more blue button-shaped chocolate inside. Charlie gobble up the chocolate into his mouth, Barry cried, he lost the race and he didn't get anything. In frustration and anger Barry took the red chocolate which was lying on the dirty street and ate it. Both were too young to understand life, they did what their little primitive brains wanted or what their hearts desired.
