Maria Zagorskaya

Isn't she beautiful? I mean the horse. No, just kidding. I like this picture, also her smile. This is Maria Zagorskaya, known as Masha to many is from Moscow, Russia. She is an artist, author and equestrian. I came to know about her through a close friend of mine, we were talking about how to be happy and positive in life and Maria's life came up. I searched about Maria but couldn't find much about her.

After knowing bit about her story, I believe Maria and her work deserves to be known to many. Maria has cerebral palsy (a congenital disorder of movement) from her childhood, but it never stopped her from trying new things and making achievements.

She had difficulties from a very young age to start walking, however she actively crawled and drew on the floor. She started drawing at a young age and later it became her lifestyle. Her family gave her all the support at a young age and later also.

About art

As Masha described, she likes to express the mood and the feelings with colours, and the harmony of colours and light is the main aim. She thinks it's a philosophy of life that makes a harmonical combination from parts into something whole.

She likes impressionism and post-Impressionism as in the paintings of Van Gogh, the image of soaring soul and tenderness  in the paintings of Marc Chagall, the compositions, shape and texture as in the paintings of Pavel Filonov. When she searched for her style she learned from those artists, but she assumes that the personal mood, thoughts and energy gives the individuality in the work of the artist.

Masha’s father is Konstantin Ivanovich Zagorsky. He is a Russian artist and also he worked for the Gorky film Studio. He was a production designer for many movies, such as ‘Mio in the Land of Faraway’, “Moscow-Cassiopeia”, “Teens in the Universe “ and others. Then Maria went to school with normal kids, and the teachers wrote at her school journal “Masha is very active during the breaks and it’s hard for teachers to catch up to her speed”. Masha graduated from the Moscow Academic Art School. She paints usually with bright colors. She participated at exhibitions not only in Moscow, but in different cities. Some of her pictures have gone to the collections in other countries. She also worked in Paris for two month.

Her adventures

Masha took some titles at the Paralympic Dressage. She started it as hippotherapy (because of her health), and then participated in dressage for 20 years. The championships happened in different countries, so it gave Masha an opportunity to travel, to have an experience and to get used to different circumstances.

She started to train at ~14 years old. She participated in several Russian equestrian championships. Also she participated in some Championships in other countries, for: 2008 Paralympic Games, Beijing, China. 2009 European Para Dressage Championships, Kristiansand, Norway. 2010 World Para-Equestrian Games in Kentucky, Lexington, USA. 2011 Continental/Regional Championships. Moorsele, Belgium. 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, Caen, France. As her friends say “If she wants something, it’s hard to change her mind”. She wanted to try a sky diving, so she did it. She tried diving and trained for some time.

She uses a walking stick but she likes walking in the mountains, sometimes choosing the hard way. She is always inspired by mountains and landscapes and loves to draw it. She wrote poetry and published few books.

Her first book "Captured by new revelation again " (И заново в плену открытий) was printed in 1993, it contains pictures, poetry and stories.
Her second book was “At the edge of love” ("На краю любви"), printed in 2000 and includes her poetry. She wanted to show different and deep sides of relationships and the fact that on the edge of strength a person could get through the sadness and get to the feeling of sunny happiness of life.
Her third book is called “A necklace” (Бусы), and includes her poetry and her friend’s pictures. Her energy and adventures attract friends who ask her to visit them and places around.

Masha moved from Moscow to Kabardino-Balkaria - closer to mountains as she loves the mountains and to be close to nature.

Masha have a husband and a son. As my friend Alina says “ We all live in different circumstances, and I’m not saying that all of us could follow our dreams, living at the sea or visiting other countries. But sometimes people like Masha remind me that there's a different way of living - with joy, inspiration and energy, despite the issues.”

The End.
