Will We Ever Learn? | A Covid 19 concern | Harison Xavier

I wrote the above title about  three months ago and now it is September. I didn't want to write about it because  something tells me this is just the tip of the iceberg. Yes. this is a rant on things that could have been done before in the past effectively. Yet for some reasons we didn't do it.  I wanted to reach out to people and make them understand how serious the situation is.

I know most people are perfectly heathy and they will not die due to Corona. Yet we can't risk loosing our older generation to this disaster, that should not happen due to our irresponsibility. For the past 6 months I am spending my days in a room alone away from friends and family, I definitely want to see my family and be with them but due to many reason I don't want to go there at this time also on top of that I may risk bringing Corona to my home. I don't want to do that. I have done enough.

Recently I read an article by Muralee Thummarukudy, he is the Chief of Disaster Risk Reduction in the UN Environment Programme. Yes we never fully listen to people like these. We have our own things worry about. We always ignore the scientists before a big disaster.

Muralee Thummarukudy writes

When Corona gets home

Looking at the discussions on the Kerala channel and the street protests at a time when corona cases are on the rise in Kerala, it seems that there is nothing to say to anyone. But since my mother is in Tummarukudi, I have things to say to my family. I have said that and I am putting a copy of it here. Those who are interested can read it and use it if it applies to you. Comments are personal.

The number of coronation cases in Kerala has crossed 4,000 per day. Although more or less, the trend of the disease is upwards. The disease now spreads from one person to more than one person on average. If this situation continues, the number of cases will increase to 5,000 and then 10,000 per day. The number of cases has exceeded one lakh, now it can be several lakhs and ten lakhs.

Deaths are also on the rise. So far the total number of cases is 125000 and the number of recovered is ninety thousand. The death toll was 501, about 0.5 percent. If this level continues, the average daily death toll will rise to 25, with an average of 5,000 cases.

But things do not stand still. When the number of cases exceeds ten thousand, it is unlikely that there will be an ICU bed or ventilator to provide for everyone who is acutely ill. Then the death rate will increase. Such a famine may not come all over Kerala at the same time and there is no way to come. But having enough ventilator in Thiruvananthapuram will not provide oxygen to the patients in Palakkad and vice versa. Problems are likely to worsen locally.

The number of such cases and deaths is slowly increasing day by day, hospital facilities are becoming unusable, mortality rates are increasing many times over, scary images are coming from hospitals and cemeteries, people are getting scared, corona is once again on the priority list of people, struggles are decreasing, government is bringing in more restrictions again , Disease rate decreases. This is the first cycle of the Corona.

This cycle is repeated several times before the coronavirus vaccine is discovered.

Now let's take our own case.

Corona has already reached China, Italy, USA, Ranni, Konni, Thiruvananthapuram, Malappuram, Ernakulam, Perumbavoor and Vengola.

The rest is our house.

Whether the corona will come into our home is no longer a relevant question. When does the corona come home, who gets it first, how many will affected, these are the questions to ask.

Are we ready to face the Corona when it arrives in our home?

For most people, corona disease comes and goes like a mild fever. But for a small percentage (now about five per cent) the situation will get a little worse. Of these, four will survive hospital treatment, while less than one per cent of the population in Kerala is currently suffering from coronary heart disease.

Older people (especially those over 65), people with diabetes, people with high blood pressure, people being treated for cancer and people with immune system disorders are at the highest risk.

How to deal with corona in this situation?

1. Who has a serious risk of coronary heart disease in our home? How to protect them? Talk openly (including those at risk). Tell them the decisions to be made on that subject.

2. Those at risk sit on the reverse quarantine. That means not going out, not coming in contact with people going out of the house, and minimizing contact with others in the house.

3. With the increase in the number of cases, if a person comes home with corona, the way is to do self-isolation at home. So think about what home systems should look like. Decide in advance which room the patient should use and what facilities they will need and make the necessary changes. Buy a pulse oximeter to use in case of illness or make sure you have it with friends.

4. The current law is that if one person gets sick at home, the others must stay in the quarantine. Therefore, buy home remedies for one month. Food items for two weeks.

5. Going to work outside of high risk people (including those who run shops) is definitely risky and should be avoided if possible. At the same time, if someone has to move out of the house with a high-risk group for work, it is often not possible to stop it. But always keep in mind that the more people you interact with outside, the higher the risk and the risk to those at home, even if we are not aware that we are getting sick.

6. If there is a high risk person in the house, completely avoid the visit of others (relatives, benefactors, merchants) to the house. Minimize the attendance of others (neighbors, homeworkers). Be careful not to let outsiders come into contact with high risk people for any reason.

7. Adhere to good hygiene habits (hand washing, keeping social distance, wearing masks) mandatory and accurate. Make sure others follow.

8. Do not postpone the treatment of high risk people or others at home if they have other health problems. Maximum online consultation should be done and if required go to hospitals as per Covid protocol.

9. Ensure the mental health of everyone at home. It is important to note that children do not speak or adults are more angry. Whenever possible, talk to friends, go out at least once a week (go for a drive even if you have never been out anywhere), and watch movies that make us happy together, and do everything we can to keep our mental state well.

10. We are entering a critical stage of the disease, and it is important to keep in mind that it is no longer important to go through this stage without corona deaths in our home. Everything else, study, work, and association may not be as old-fashioned. But think of it as a loss to survive this time.

Be safe.
