Artificial Intelligence : Our Future | Harison Xavier

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the hottest trend and news for the past few years. I was first introduced the term A.I when I was sitting with a couple of software engineering students about 4 years ago. They were discussing about how robots will take over all the jobs. How technology will handle itself without any human interaction. It was scary, I felt like I will be killed by robots in a few years. Just like the "Terminator : Judgement Day" movie scene.

I didn't comment about anything at that time because the people who were talking in the group were the so called "experts"  in the industry than me. I knew most of it would be some cooked up story from some random dude but there was a sense of worry in most peoples face. Is this going to be the end of the world?  Will we humans be erased from the face of the earth?
   

What is this all about?

 AI is a computer which learns to display natural intelligence of humans or animals. One of the best example in our current times  is Tesla Cars, these cars can drive through traffic without humans interference. These cars are controlled by one onboard powerful computer, they navigate through traffic using 8 cameras, 12 ultrasonic sensors or radar. 

And some other cool features are : 

Automatic Emergency Braking, 

Front Collision Warning, 

Side Collision Warning, 

Obstacle Aware Acceleration,

Blind Spot Monitoring, 

Lane Departure Avoidance, 

Emergency Lane

Departure Avoidance. 

 One of the most important feature : A powerful car which runs on battery. Just plug it in and once charged, drive away .
    There won't be a need for humans to drive anymore. We don't even have to actually think or be cautious while driving, the autopilot will do that job for you. I am not criticizing the car or technology. 

Elon Musk and his Tesla team have done the greatest job. They proved the world that what was seen impossible was made possible and is right in front of us. 

Cars with autopilot technology will reduce accidents in future, as cars starts communicating with each other in traffic and talking away the carelessness of humans behind the wheels. The roads will be a better place. 

 

Lets get back to AI, I always wonder what will our future look like, thinking and talking about the future is one of my favorite subjects. I feel so overwhelming gratitude for all the technology that we have today, currently even though if I didn't go out, I could speak, see any one around the world using technology. 

            

            I am able to speak to strangers anywhere language is not a barrier anymore, learn anything online.  If this is the world that we live in now. How will it be in next 30 to 50 years. I may not even be alive at that time but thinking about it makes me so happy and excited about the future.   

Thoughts on future makes me humble. How little I know, how simple and irrelevant I am. I wish I could be an important part of the future, help it build to its best for the betterment of humanity. 

A Bright Future

It is not just the cars that will change, it is all jobs that have repetitive process in it. Also it would make contributions to creative fields like music, art and dance.

In healthcare a system is used named as IBM Watson : " combining human experts with augmented intelligence, IBM Watson Health helps health professionals and researchers around the world translate data and knowledge into insights to make more-informed decisions about care in hundreds of hospitals and health organizations " 

AI is already here. Welcome to the new age! This is our future. 

In manufacturing, humans are already replaced by giant and small robots, they do thing efficiently and consistently. This gives higher quality production and customer satisfaction. 

In farming we already have automated tractors that plough and harvest crops with help of GPS and autopilot. 

In restaurants,  "Be@Kiwizo" a  robotic themed restaurant in Kannur, Kerala, India, have employed three robot waiters for taking orders and serving food to customers. One robot is used to entertain kids, play with them, dance, sing and take them to the restroom by holding hands. I couldn't believe this at first when I heard about it, but it is here. People do get concerns on their job security. 

Home cleaning robots, when I was younger, this was something I though that will take much longer for people to adopt, due to the prize of the robots and how fancy it is for home purpose. We are humans, we are basically lazy, so we will find things to make our life easier. Innovators brought in the technology  with a very simple design that could do the job. More power and time to the people.

It looks like at this speed in which new innovation that comes out every now and then, there will not be much jobs left for humans to do.  So what job will humans do in the future?  

My question is why would any humans work anymore? I see that there will always be new jobs created as with the rise of technology. So I see that there will always be advanced jobs for people to do. 

However the jobs that we see today, and the people who are working 8 to 10 hours to make ends meet do not enjoy their jobs. They are doing it to stay alive. So who would ever want to work in a job that they hate? 

Once everything is converted to A.I, humans in the whole will be having an universal income. There may even be a time when humans don't use currencies anymore. It is turned to digital currency or crypto. 

I have a vision that people will be given a better life and access to better healthcare for all people by the government. 

Once our jobs and business are taken over by the technology, we will have more leisure time. People will start going into fields that they love for example  dancing, singing, writing novels and stories, volunteering their time for the society and traveling extensively. 

We would be even thinking and communicating as fasts as a computers. In a recent interview with Jeo Rogan, Elon Musk explains about the Neuralink program he is working on. In simple words it is a chip that will be implanted on a human skull that could process information for the brain like a computer. 

The whole idea of making humans attain symbiosis with the AI and address brain related disorders. They may take a long time to be implemented on humans as FDA approval for experiments like these are so hard to get. Elon Musk says the it would take up to 10 years more. However it is already here. Their primary concern or initial problem is to help people to overcome their brain related disorders. When I came across this news about a year ago, I thought to myself that I want one. If it helps me think faster like a computer and communicate without my speech with any interface. " I could be cyborg!", its a dream, maybe someday it is possible. 

The following video is from Neuralink they explain this concept more in detail, I am having the most thunderstruck moments of life watching this video. Gives me the question "am I  already in the future ?". The video is almost two hour long, if possible try watching it.   

I believe this is not too long, as this is a blog I wish to keep it simple and short. I wanted to share much more, however let me quickly go through a few more applications of AI in near future or current times. 

We may not need to carry a mobile phone in distant future, we may be able to control them with our thoughts and just like we can control machine with motion detector or augmented reality.

Our education system may go online in future as it is more easy and needs less infrastructure. mentioning the current situation Corona virus pandemic where most of the class are done online, education management must have noticed the money they have saved with building and its maintenance , electricity and water. 

Finally business institutions, if they could come up with a safe security system for the employees  to work from home outside the organisation network, organisations can reduce the cost of their infrastructure and maintenance .

Conclusion 

  I will stop here for now, I have more to say but normally people will loose interest when it is this long. If you are reading this, you have just made it to the end and congratulations.  You are one of the most patient people on earth. Give yourself a treat for that.

 A change is inevitable, so the best option we have is to change with the change, sooner or later it will come in the existence and we must be ready to change with it. Loosing out is not an option here, inorder to make our life and career better we must be prepared for the change, we are not yet late. We have got limited time, So I encourage you to continue your journey to the future picking up knowledge on the way. 

 
I am still learning about AI, and what I have mentioned above are best of my knowledge on this topic at the time of writing. Once I have more research on this and give a deep thought I would be more clear and correct with my vision and thoughts.
